Saturday Market at Kampung Buloh/Permaisuri

It has been months already I have not gone to my mother in law's house at Kampung Rahmat, Chalok, Setiu, Terengganu. The kampung is one of the oldest FELDA (Federal Land Development Authority) settlements created just after Merdeka (independent). FELDA Kg. Rahmat is the only FELDA settlement in Terengganu located beside the Federal trunk road. It should have been developed accordingly to become a big and advanced FELDA settlement.

But then the place is just like other sleeping Malay settlements, adrift behind the development of the country. It became hilarious settlement during festive seasons only, like Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Aidil Adha when most sons and daughters of the settlers will be at home to celebrate the occasions together. Then it will be a sleeping village again, after all sons, daughters and grandsons/daughters left to their own homes...away.

Last Friday I went to my mother in law's house together with my wife, Kak Mie. We slept at Kg Rahmat on Friday night. Next day (Saturday 16th April,2011), at about 9.00am we (my mother in law Wan Simik, Kak Mie plus two neighbors and me) went to Kg. Buloh or Bandar Permaisuri. The small town is having a public markets on every Sundays and Tuesdays weekly.

Local hawkers, pedlars and sellers from the small town and other places gathered and set up canopies, tents, big umbrellas and fixed tables or mats to place goods, items, foods, vegetables, clothes and fruits for sale.

Local foods like steamed groundnuts, peas, corn and packed local coconut juice paste called manisan kelapa (placed bottom in the left picture) are available with considerable prices.

Mangoes, durians and oranges are also for sale.

They also sell keropok goreng (fried fish sausage), fried banana and  apam balik  (a kind of local fried cake).

Bananas on sale.

The other mangoes stall.

Fresh vegetables for sale.

We spent about 3 hours at the market and after buying so many things ( most are not really needed) we went home. We have a very special lunch at home that afternoon.

At about 3.00pm I drove back to Kuala Terengganu via coastal road and stop at Merang to visit my friend, the co-owner of Redang Mutiara Beach Resort. We have a warm welcome and have some refreshment tea.

We arrived at home in Kuala Ibai at about 6.30pm.
